Nevertheless, I would like to provide you with the following information to enable you to do the relevant research during your free time, and to be prepared.

The requirements for the Scoutcraft Badge are shown on pages 10 and 11 of “The Scout Record Book” – the Green Book.

4 – Knives and Axes:
There are strict NSW laws regarding the carriage and use of knives. We would like you to be able to safely use axes and Scout knives, for when these tools are required for scouting activities. You need to know the relevant safety rules. See (pages 86-87) of the “Fieldbook for Australian Scouting”. A Scout Leader will assist you when you have to demonstrate your skills! The rules governing the use of knives by Scouts at 1st Castle Hill are:

  • Knives are only to be carried on specific activities, and must be approved by the Activity Leader (on the A1 activity notification form) for that activity.
  • You need to have earned a Pioneer Badge BEFORE you using these tools.
  • Multi-tools and Swiss army knives are the only type of knife that would be approved. Knives must have folding blades, which will fold away safely when not in use.

5 – Patrol System

  • Discuss with your Patrol Leader the requirements of the Pioneer Target or other appropriate target of the Award Scheme.
  • Discuss with your Patrol Leader how the Patrol System operates in your troop, e.g. election of Patrol Leader; appointment of APL, responsibilities of the Troop Council.
  • Show an understanding of the structure and duties of the patrol.

A Special Note to Parents
“The Australian Scoutbook” – the Green Book – is similar to the Yellow Book from Cubs and will be provided to your child by the Troop. We use this book to track their progress through Scouts. The “Fieldbook for Australian Scouting” is the most useful book that a Scout can ever possess and will make a worthy addition to your library at home. They cost around $40 from the “Scout Shop”.
